It’s a day before VP Harris names her running mate for the 2024 Presidential campaign. If you listen to all the so-called political experts Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has been declared the best choice because they believe he gives her the best chance to win that Electoral College votes for that state. They say she must win those votes in order to win the election.
Recently, Pennsylvania Democratic Senator from has openly expressed some concerns about Shapiro. Needless to say that is adds a new element to the decision that must be considered. While the media has been hyping the Governor, this resistance to his selection by the sitting Senator from his own state is a problem.
Both Shapiro and Fetterman are Jewish, but they represent different wings of the pro-Israeli political thought.
Does VP Harris really want to piss off a sitting senator whose vote she will need on bills and nominations? Does she really want to risk that? Either way, given the current state of mindset of potential youth and independent voters, this is a minefield that VP Harris can easily avoid. The most exciting and wise choice she could make at this time is Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz.
2 weeks ago, I was watching an interview Lawrence O’Donnell was doing with David Hogg, the youth activist and survivor of a mass shooting at his Florida high school. He was endorsing VP Harris and when asked who his organization was looking at for her VP choice he mentioned Tim Waltz. A few days later I saw the Minnesota Governor being interviewed where he called Trump’s VP Pick ‘Weird’.
That has become the Democratic rallying cry against the ‘Trump/Vance’ team. Waltz is a Veteran, a former member of Congress, and as Governor, his state had enacted some very Progressive policies, the most popular is free meals for every public school student in the state. He also signed into law a bill that protects abortion access in his state.
While I can appreciate why a lot of talking heads like Shapiro, he hasn’t actually done what Waltz has already accomplished. Waltz will motivate a Progressive youth engagement. He has no baggage as it relates to the Israeli/Palestinian so Palestinians in Michigan will not be the problem that they had become for Biden. VP Harris has already told Netanyahu his Zionist positions will not stand with her administration.
We shall see if my read is correct by tomorrow evening.
